After the Central General Staff of the Farc dissidents threatened the development of the regional elections in October, the Interior Minister Luis Fernando Velasco announced the strengthening of security in the territories.
“The Government not only takes note, but in special security meetings with the Army, the Military Forces, the Police and the National Protection Unit, it is preparing a special strategy,” Velasco stated.
Particularly, given the threats of the dissidents in Guaviare, Caquetá, Putumayo and Meta, the minister announced that “One of the first actions is to reinforce the security of those four mayors (Tibú, Cartagena del Chairá, Puerto Guzmán and San José del Palmar) who have had to leave the areas, so that they can return, dispatch from their territory and also lead the electoral process from there”.
By the way, the national registrar Alexander Vega indicated that “We have respectfully asked the Minister of Defense that there cannot be an election when the mayors are not even in the municipalities. The great advantage is that the State is much stronger than the threats, and the elections must be guaranteed”.
