Nevado del Ruiz: activity goes to orange level and could erupt – Other Cities – Colombia

The activity level of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano change. As reported by the Colombian Geological Service (SGC) and the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management, the activity level went from yellow to orange.

(In context: Increased seismic activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia is alerted).

What does the orange activity level mean?

The Nevado del Ruiz has been constantly monitored, as it is one of the 25 volcanoes that Colombia has that remains active. In addition, he is recognized for his “explosive nature” that led to the Armero tragedy in 1985.

According to the authorities, based on the changes registered, “There is a probability that in days or weeks the Nevado del Ruiz volcano will erupt more than it has in the last decade.”

Throughout this period of time the volcano, located between Tolima and Caldas, has been active, but it has been less than what has occurred in the last few hours and would lead to an eruption.

“On March 29, the largest number of daily earthquakes recorded since the seismic monitoring of this volcano began in 1985 was recorded, the SGC raised the level of activity of this volcano in such a way that the necessary preventive actions can be taken in a way timely,” they explained.

Of course, taking into account the conditions that have surrounded these cases over the years, “it is possible that this volcanic phenomenon
continue to occur without implying a greater risk”.

Call to reduce the impact

Javier Pava Sánchez, general director of the UNGRD, asked the departmental and municipal risk management councils within the area of influence “to intensify response preparation actions, including aspects such as verification and adaptation of evacuation routes, meeting points , as well as updating territorial response strategies”, in order to mitigate the impacts that a possible eruption could cause.

Depending on how the situation progresses in the next few hours, the authorities could install a Unified Command Post (PMU) for decision-making more quickly.

“UNGRD recommends that all preparation actions to respond to a possible eruption be ready: evacuation plans socialized and implemented, correctly articulated with alert systems, evacuation routes marked and in good condition, as well as evaluating access restrictions. to some areas,” the entity said.
